Our clients for this garden were two keen gardeners and our brief was to create a new garden with lots of room for herbaceoaus planting. By the house was an existing flagstone patio which was re-shaped and, to the rear, new houses had been built so a line of Hornbeam trees were established to block these out and create some privacy. A metal water rill was also incorporated cutting up the garden. This dropped into a small pool down by the house but, on its journey to the top of the garden, it also ran through planting beds and across paths with the idea that you had to stumble across it rather than see it easily all in one go.
The garden has been opened for the National Garden Scheme and below is their description:
"This small walled garden was part of the original farmyard. It has been developed as a contemporary take on a traditional English cottage garden. Although there is a strong underlying design element, there is an informality in the way the mixed herbaceous borders have been planted. Raised vegetable beds, fruit trees and a rill add further interest. There are a number of view points with seats."
