For this urban garden of a renovated mid-century house, the client wanted to create a garden that picked up on the linear design of the house and connected with the newly revamped interior. This gave us a wonderful oppportunity to pick up on some of that retro mid-century style whilst keeping the spaces clean and modern.
A large plane of water formed the main axis through the garden and lined up with the dining room window. The focal point at the end of the garden was a retro concrete block wall giving a nod to the era of the house. Adjacent to the water plane was a large gravel seating area and herbaceous planting beds. The boundary fences were covered with Hornbeam hedging and a mature Silver birch and Magnolia tree were retained. Down by the house, a low wall enclosed the patio space and also formed a permanent fireplace. The planting was designed to be a mixture of old and new, formal and informal. Pinus mugo, Box balls, Hebe rakiensis, Santolina rosmarinfolia and Potentilla formed a base shrub structure whilst roses and peonies bring blousy old school colour. Sisyrinchium was used as an alterntive to a more classic iris.
